Document Summary

Teachers are designers because they design curriculum and learning experiences to meet specified purposes, designers of assessments to diagnose student"s needs to guide our teaching. Effectiveness of design corresponds to whether students have met the end goal. Focus on a topic, use particular resources & choose specific instructional methods to cause learning at a given standard. Backward because teachers begin with textbooks, favoured lessons and time- honored activities rather than tools from goals or standards. The most effective curricular design is backwards start the end (goals desired results/ standards ) and then derive the curriculum evidence of learning (performances) called by standard and the teaching needed to equip students to perform. Backward design calls for goals/ standards of assessment evidence as we begin to plan a unit or course to begin with questions. Planning sequence for curriculum occurs in 3 stages: identify desired results refers to pg. 3.
