Document Summary

Most important/ powerful influence on learning and achievement can be negative or positive. The type of feedback and the way it is given can be differentially effective. Feedback: information provided by an agent (e. g. teacher, peer book, parent, self, experience) regarding aspects of one"s performance or understanding. Needs to relate to the task or process of learning that fills the gap between what is understood and what is aimed to be understood. Can be done through affective processes: increased effort, motivation, engagement. Some types of feedback are more powerful than others tangible rewards undermined intrinsic motivation, feedback in controlling manner was worse. Main purpose of feedback is to reduce discrepancies between current understandings and performance as a goal. Effective feedback must answer 3 major questions asked by a teacher or /and student. Where am i going? (what are the goals?) How am i going? (what progress is being made toward the goal?)
