Document Summary

Eds300 review and exam notes: edward l. thorndike (1874 - 1949): a behaviourist who lead research on operant conditioning. This involves learning from the consequences of our behavior. Skinner"s theory of operant conditioning is built on the ideas of edward thorndike. Thorndike (1898) studied learning in animals (usually cats). He devised a classic experiment in which he used a puzzle box to empirically test the laws of learning. Pavlov showed the existence of the unconditioned response by presenting a dog with a bowl of food and the measuring its salivary secretions. Pavlov discovered that any object or event which the dogs learnt to associate with food (such as the lab assistant) would trigger the same response, he realized that he had made an important scientific discovery. The lab assistant was originally a neutral stimulus. It is called neutral because it produces no response.
