Document Summary
Vocabulary and important facts (use this to study for part c of the midterm) Impasto = means to have the paint applied thickly, creating textures and lifted areas in the paint. Sforzati = an italian word, referring to painting fast and loosely (spontaneous) Pastosita = pastiness or thickness (can be used to describe impasto) Often used in ceiling paintings, where you use egg whites with pigment to paint into the wet plaster of the ceiling or wall. Quadro riportato = an italian meaning moved painting. This refers to when the orientation of a painting is moved, for example, from the wall to the ceiling. When the viewer looks up to the painting, it will still be oriented as if it was on the wall. (see the ceiling of the farnese gallery) Chiaroscuro = the technique of having extremely dark, almost empty backgrounds. This technique causes the figures in light to stand out much more.
