Document Summary
Neurons: individual cells in the nervous system that receive, integrate, and transmit information: vast majority of them only communicate with other neurons, small majority receive from sensory organs. Soma: (cell body) contains the cell nucleus and much of the chemical machinery common in most cell. Dendrites: the parts of the neuron that specialized to receive information. Axon: a long, thin fibre that transmits signals away from the soma to other neurons or to muscles or glands. Myelin sheath: insulating material, derived from glial cells that encases some axons: speeds up the transmission of signals that along axons, multiple sclerosis: caused by degeneration of myelin sheaths. Terminal buttons: small knobs that secrete chemicals called neurotransmitters. Synapses: a junction where information is transmitted from one neuron to another. information dendrites soma axon synapses. Glia: cells found throughout the nervous system that provide various types of support for neurons. Tend to be much smaller than neurons and can outnumber them (10:1)
