Document Summary

The effect of complexity and interaction on problem solving. Both subjects were asked to solve words in which they knew the syllable length of the word. As well, half the words were from the reading, and the other half of the trial they were chosen at random. The experimental hypothesis was that subjects would perform best when the word was of one syllable in length and related to the passage they had read. However, one of these variables combined with a different manipulated variable (i. e. random, two syllable word) would not have as successful an outcome. The results were in fact consistent with the hypothesis. The subjects performed best when the word was one syllable in length and an antonym of words from the reading, rather than any other combination of manipulated variables. The ability to solve complex problems and find relations between tangible and intangible concepts is a preprogrammed part of human nature.
