Document Summary

Drug addiction- uncontrollable desire to take a drug accompanied by diminished control in limiting intake and the emergence of an unpleasant emotional state. Because of maladaptive factors related to addiction (predisposition, acquisition, craving, withdrawal, relapse) we use the term addiction syndrome to convey the expansive nature of this condition. Physiological components of the addiction syndrome include tolerance, The maladaptive pattern of drug use often leads to the individual desiring more and more of the drug to recreate the first encounter. Reduced responsiveness (tolerance to a drug) may result from several mecha(cid:374)is(cid:373)s, su(cid:272)h as the (cid:271)od(cid:455)"s a(cid:374)d (cid:271)rai(cid:374)"s i(cid:374)(cid:272)reased effi(cid:272)ie(cid:374)(cid:272)(cid:455) at (cid:271)reaki(cid:374)g do(cid:449)(cid:374) the drug. Addicts also experience withdrawal during times of abstinence (when drug is not consumed). Negative reinforcement- many times patient is motivated to resume taking drugs to avoid aversive symptoms. Once tolerance and withdrawal are experienced, the person is generally thought to be dependant on the drug.
