Document Summary

*1st anatomists visualize brain: harden by formaldehyde, sliced into sheets & stained. *dendrites extensions of cell surface by dendritic spines, 1-20 dendrites/neuron. *axon begins at axon hillock branches at axon collaterals. Axon tip has small branches called teleodendria, end of each is the terminal button (knob near dendrititic spine) *sensory neurons bring info into brain form sensory receptors, simple structure. Bipolar neurons: transmits sensory info from retina"s light receptors to neurons that carry info into brain"s visual centers. Somatosensory neuron: brings sensory info from body into spinal cord, connects direct to axon. *interneurons: link sensory & motor neurons, by branches. Stellate (star-shaped) cell, small, with many dendrites extending around cell body. Pyramidal cell: long axon, pyramid cell body, 1 dendrite projecting from cell apex, carry info from cortex to cns. Purkinje cell: branched dendrites form fan shape, carries info from cerebellum to cns. *motor neurons: dendrites, long axons, large cell bodies, info passed form brain to muscles.
