SOC265H1 Study Guide - Final Guide: Gender Binary
Document Summary
Intersex narratives: gender, medicine and identity. pgs 32-42 in sex, Gender and sexuality, edited by abby ferber, kimberly holcomb, and tre wentling. This article talks about a family, which has two parents and three children. This family decided to keep their third baby"s gender a mystery. They did so by not telling any one about whether their baby was a boy or girl. This family was very broad minded about the way children should be brought up. Also they did not want their children to be the victims of the gender binary commonly found in the society. They wanted their children to make their own choices from a very young age, whether it was about their clothes or about their gender identity. The scope of this article is basically every individual in every society that like to classify a baby as either a boy or a girl as soon as he or she is born.
