What is health?
• A measure of mental/psychological and physical well-being
o Subjective measure: influenced by culture / media / religion
• Natural / Environmental Health
• Public Health (Physical health & disease prevention)
o 2.6-3% of federal budget for health is for mental health
• Sexual Health
o Ontario sex education program came out in 2016, from K – 12, it encompasses
trust, body, intimacy, touch, being safe. (Doug Ford trying to repeal it)
• Spiritual Health
o And ensuring access to practitioners / places of worship
What is Disease?
• Chronic
• Physical
• Pathogens / organisms
o But then what about chronic fatigue? Lyme disease? Fibro myalgia?

• Defined by oneself – an interpretation/perception of one’s health status

LECTURE 2 – Jun 8th
A (typical day) in British Columbia:
• 121 Live Births
o 62 males and 59 females are born
(males are more likely to die in the womb and at the time of birth)

▪ 3 were born to teenagers (30-40% smoke tobacco, makes the baby
smaller – more allergies and asthma among these babies. 41 000
unplanned teen pregnancies in Canada – well over 50% do not graduate
from high school, most stay at a grade 8 level. More likely to have a
second child within 2 years) (number of spontaneous or therapeutic
abortions is around 50% across all ages)
▪ 28 were born to mothers aged 35 or over (20% of older moms smoke)
▪ 4 were multiple births
▪ 38 were caesarean deliveries
▪ 7 were low birth weight babies
▪ 9 were pre-term (SIDS – especially with preemies who have
underdeveloped respiratory systems)

▪ 5 infant deaths every 10 days
o 24 deaths were due to diseases of the circulatory system including
▪ 16 from cardiovascular
▪ 6 from cerebrovascular
o 25 deaths were due to malignant neoplasms (cancer) including:
▪ 6 from malignant neoplasm of trachea and lung (tobacco related)
▪ 3 from malignant neoplasm of colon and rectum
▪ 2 from malignant neoplasm of the female breast
o 9 deaths were due to diseases of the respiratory system including:
▪ 3 from pneumonia and influenza
▪ 4 from chronic pulmonary disease
o 2 deaths every 10 days were due to HIV disease (about 50% of adults with HIV go
on to develops AIDS)
o 5 deaths were from external causes including:
▪ 1 suicide (number one reason that females between ages of 15 and 20
are admitted to hospital is due to suicide attempt)
