Personality is an individual"s unique variation on the general evolutionary design for human nature, expressed as a developing pattern of dispositional traits, characteristic adaptations, and integrative life stories, complexly and differentially situated in culture. ". Three levels at which personality can be analyzed: traits, characteristic adaptations, life stories. Personality neuroscience focused primarily on traits (1) relatively stable patterns of behavior, motivation, emotion, and cognition that are not specific to culture frequency and intensity with which individuals exhibit various behavioral, states. In contrast characteristic adaptations & life stories describe individual"s specific responses to particular life circumstances complexity makes them hard to study. Aim of personality neuroscience: understand both biological systems responsible for states associated with traits and parameters of those systems that cause them to function differently in different individuals.
