Early traditions, classical criminology and the positivist movement. Criminology, in its broadest sense, consists of our organised ways of thinking and talking about crime, criminals and crime control. In the 1700s, these words came about when talking about criminology". Pre-enlightenment punishment - 1757: the execution of damiens the regicide, the body of the condemned, executions, bloody deaths. Post-enlightenment punishment early c19: rules for the house of the young prisoners, the soul of the undisciplined. The prisoners would be placed in bentham"s panopticon (circle) and never know if the guards were watching them, so were more likely to behave and become a calmer and more orderly society. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, then, the great spectacle of physical punishment disappeared; the tortured body was avoided; the theatrical representation of pain was excluded from punishment. The age of sobriety in punishment had begun. Contemporary spectacles: community payback, removing graffiti, clearing wasteland, decorating public places and buildings.
