Document Summary

In 1950s, psych at toronto shifted to study of basic processes exclusive of societal applications. Many departments regulated professional psych to a faculty of education. In 60s and 70s, they introduced clinical psychology programmes. After wwii, francophone departments of psych integrated experimental and professional orientations. By 1970s, the cpa was publishing 3 bilingual journals. By 1970 1/4 of cpa members were women but had to struggle still for recognition. During international women"s year (1975) a task force on status of women in psych confirmed female psychologists and students were marginalized; a result was the still thriving cpa section of women. In 1949 when people"s republic was founded, the discipline revived, but psychologists were compelled to adopt marxist-leninist and maoist thought and soviet psych. Journals and research resumed, but practical applications to the state prevailed. After cultural revolution (1966-1976) when authorities dismantled psych"s infrastructure, the discipline was restored and expanded.
