Document Summary

The self: stable sense of personal identity or self image. In natural sciences, idea of the "self" was overshadowed by "trait" and "factor" theories that were quantifiable as opposed to a view of one"s identity from within. In us and uk the empirical and multivariate perspectives prevail. Five factor model is popular but often criticized for not taking into account cultural context. After wwii there was heavy societal demand for studying individual differences using quantitative methods. Psychologists debated whether personality was more dependent on traits or situation. Big five propoents argued the environment does not play significant role and differences b/w individuals are result of differences in genetics. Both structure and process approaches work for big five proponents bc people"s personalities are stable over time but variable from day to day. Big five traits: oppenness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism (ocean)
