BIOS1167 FOUNDATIONS OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE
Homeostasis - the dynamics of biomedical systems:
1.Explain what is meant by the internal environment of an organism:
Is the outside of the cells inside the body of an organism
Contains intracellular >uid which is inside the cell
Contains extracellular >uid which is outside the cell including:
inters??al >uid and plasma
2. Describe the rela?onship between the internal environment and the
extracellular >uid:
Substances in plasma must pass through inters??al >uid before
entering cell. The compartments must interact to maintain
homeostasis. Plasma and inters??al >uid have similar compartments
though there is no protein in inters??al >uid.
3. Explain why it is necessary to control the internal condi?ons in our body:
Body has strict requirements for proper func?oning such as core
body temperature at 37 degrees Celsius
Important to ensure op?mal condi?ons for enzymes. This is an
absolute requirement for op?mal body func?on
4. De+ne homeostasis and homeosta?c mechanism:
De+ni?on – same or unchanging. Is a property of systems in which
variables are regulated so that internal condi?ons remain stable and
rela?vely constant
Homeosta?c mechanisms – are the func?on of cells, ?ssues and
organs organised in feedback systems.
5. Give examples of homeosta?c mechanisms in major body systems:
Nega?ve feedback
Posi?ve feedback
6. Name the two intracellular communica?on systems in our body:
