Document Summary

Two broad coalitions of many ideological groups lumped under a simile. For purposes of elections we have 2 parties. George washington did not have a party. Founding fathers wanted no party system washington"s farewell warned against factions (he realizes different points of views, but he is against institutionalized factions) Institutions are immovable; not known for responding to change quickly. John adams said parties were greatest political evil . He fears party system will turn america into a party politics nation. Goal of large republic and pluralism is take all these povs and, instead of institutionalizing them into parties, filtering ideas into things everyone can come to terms with. Adams was a federalist, along w/ hamilton; jefferson was democratic republican first party system. Hamiltonians wanted alliance w. england; jeffersonians wanted an alliance w. Jeffersonians wanted state government to have power; hamiltonians wanted strong central gov"t. By 1820 there was no federalists - just the democratic republicans remained.
