Socrates was accused of being a sophist, it was seen as a negative thing. Athens was considered to have mob rule , tyranny of the majority. No separation of powers or individual rights for citizens. Plato founded the academy, model for modern western education. Students were taught oral history, wanted to emulate epic heroes. Gods in theses epics were shown as having human characteristics and flaws unlike god of the new testament. Athens was very wealthy at the time, lots of symposiums , large parties. Laws in athens required citizens to respect the gods of the city.
