Document Summary

Exam 1 will cover chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4, as well as all of the lecture notes from these chapters. Here is a list of things you should know about for exam 1. That is, you should know how to define and be able to understand and identify examples of each of the following terms. Note, there is a lot more to many of these terms than a simple definition, and you will be asked questions designed to make sure you understand them. This list convers 95+% of what will be on the exam. Ultimately, you are responsible for anything in the textbook and/or discussed in class. From the notes (not in the book): iconic sign, indexical sign, semantic noise, physical noise, psychological noise, physiological noise, contexts of communication (interpersonal, small group, organizational, public/rhetorical, mass/mediated, intercultural), ethics vs. morals.
