Classical greece: political and cultural developments in the city-state of athens (500-338 (5-4thc) bce) All male citizens over 18 could participate in political system in athens, women were excluded. The assembly- all eligible citizens could show up and participate. Issues were discussed and voted on including war, peace settlements, taxes, expenditure of public funds, and legislation. The jury system- citizens over 30 could volunteer for the jury system. The jury system, as in athens, was its most significant contribution to western democracy. Jurors were selected randomly from the pool of volunteers on the day of the trial, and juries were between 201 and 601 people (huge)! The trail proceeded as both parties explained their circumstanced of the issue, explain the applicable laws, and proposed a punishment. The jury would cast a secret vote on guilt and punishment. Majority decision stood and no appeals were allowed.
