The rent is too damn high. what is now an internet meme, is also a reality for many. According to a study, by steeteasy, the average nyc household is expected to pay two thirds of their income to rent. A major effect that comes with gentrification is rising rent rates. To combat this issue and provide affordable housing, new york city council has taken it upon themselves to ensure there is affordable housing. Interestingly enough, nyc affordable housing laws can be traced all the way back to post-war america. On of the oldest nyc housing policies is known as rent controlled apartments. Not to be confused with the rent stabilized apartments of the 70s. By the time the 80s rolled around, ed koch implemented the the 80/20 split policy. In more recent years, mayor de blasio was able to pass his own affordable housing bill. Sheet, rent controlled apartments were the result of a housing shortage after world war ii.
