Personality trait is (1) stable - not evolve/change (2) general - cuts across time and space dispositions or tendency to behave in a certain way. Studies how separable traits inform individual behavior/ studies traits as separable predispositions that influences and bring about individual behavior. Started with 171 terms from oxford dictionary, whittled down to 5 based on people ranking their closed one. But abandoned because found the same 5 rating strangers, not predictive of behavior. Revived by berkeley researchers, who came up with five factor model/ big 5. Jackson/ poulson study on prejudice: openness and agreeable are inversely associated with prejudice, mediated by contact frequency and equality. Situational selection & evocation uses trait theory because study the independent effects of the traits openness and agreeableness on prejudice and the behaviors that lead to prejudice. If the psychodynamic approach, they would study prejudice, openness and agreeableness as consequences of an underlying personality type.
