Ecology: the study of how and why pop. Size changes over time and the effects that change has on the population. Monitoring the changes of specific elements of a population over time, and tracking the factors that affect these elements, and making predictions about the outcome: elements: numbers, age, sex ratio, etc. Exponential growth: the growth of a population in an unlimited environment with unlimited resources in an unlimited space. How an individual can reproduce relative to the influence population size has on the individual. Logistical model is closer to predicting the real pop than the exponential model: exponential doesn"t take limited resources into consideration. Logistical model does not take into account: migration, predator stress, not every member will reproduce, phenotypic plasticity change based on environmental cues. Demography: the study of factors that determine the size and structure of a pop over time. Involves age classes, sex ratio, rate of immigration, and emigration, survivorship, mortality, and fecundity.
