Food shortages that can lead to long term starvation, or natural causes such as drought or disease. Farming was done on a small scale and they used no machines. Manure was their way of treating the soil. Over the past 100 years they managed to increase production through machines, fertilizers, irrigation, and pesticide use. Large scale farming threw the use of machines, monoculture, pesticides, and fossil fuels to boost yields. The demand has increased over the last couple years. We need good soil to continue production or else we will not have enough crops to feed the world. Crop rotation, contour farming, shelterbelts, and no till farming methods. We now use synthetic pesticides over sulfur and mercury that was previously used.
