Informal control: occurs throughout our lifetime, a product of the socialization process: example: smiling at a friend, encouragement or discouragement by parents, how family members and friends shape our behavior. Formal control: occurs by the state, enacting laws that punish us: example: training police officers, incarcerating people, enacting laws. I have a natural right to protect myself from you, and vice versa. Rather than be at odds with each other, we will transfer our rights to the state. Hobbes said people had a right to use violence to protect themselves and their property. There would be a war of all against all, a state of chaos. This contract allows us to avoid this civil unrest, it"s a pretend contract we internalize over time. This is how the state emerges and develops. Power is the use or threat of force to achieve a desired end.
