Primates with modern features: small, well-developed smell, varied teeth (and likely diet), claws, no post-orbital bar, eyes on side of head, carpolestes opposable hallux with nail. Climate warmer and wetter than today, tropical forests. Full suite of primate characteristics: ( true primates ) Grasping hands and feet, nails, hindlimb- dominated posture, smaller snouts, forward facing eyes in bony orbits, larger brains. Morphology: no grooming claw or tooth comb, short snout and monkey- like ankle joint. Late eocene and early oligocene (30-45 mya) anthropoids. May have evolved during the eocene, but radiated during oligocene (34-23ma) Colder drier climates, more tropical deciduous forests. New world monkeys--arrived in s. america during oligocene (maybe earlier) Miocene (23-5 mya: early miocene (22-17 ma) Temperatures warmer, tropical forests expand in middle latitudes. Inhabited tropical forest and woodlands-- occupied niches later occupied by monkeys. Combination of monkey- like and ape-like characters: middle miocene (16-7 ma) Africa connect to eurasia, animals migrate both ways.
