Intracellular signalling begins with ligand binding to receptor protein. Receptor proteins located on plasma membrane or inside of cell (cytosol/nucleus) Mb proteins are transmembrane (hydrophobic + hydrophilic segments) Cells that have same/similar receptor can have different response. Down regulation decrease in amount of receptors (ie if there are too many signal molecules) Can be achieved by internalization ; receptor induced endocytosis of protein. Up regulation increase in amount of receptors (ie if there"s too little signal molecule) Receptor activation conformational change in response to ligand binding; first step in cell. Signal transduction pathways event sequence that link receptor activation to cellular response. Steroid hormone receptor hydrophobic messengers that activate intracellular proteins. Water soluble messengers cannot enter cell bind to mb proteins. First messengers activate mb proteins; second messengers enter cytosol/are response synthesized as a result. Ligand gated ion channels ligand binding allows channels to open and allow ions through.
