Separation: detaches individual from previous culture and hierarchy. Liminality: individual is placed in an ambiguous state, social bonds are dissolved, experience of lowliness, experiences none of the attributes of the past or coming state. Reaggregation: passage is consummated, reestablished in society as a more humble individual. Power of people who are permanently at bottom of hierarchical society. Between rulers and ruled, the structural inferiors have the power.
