Those who are deemed insane, are institutionalized, judged and confined to these mental institutions. Experiment to see whether psychiatrists could differentiate between the sane & insane. The other patients were more inclined to detect normality of the 8 pseudopatients: doctors more inclined to see sickness. Showed that notions of inequality & abnormality are not universal but are ambiguous. Experiences shaped by diagnosis self-fulfilling prophecy: deviance: institutional perspective, relates to the disproportionalities of black males that are incarcerated, readings the mark of a criminal record by david pager. Main idea: criminal record presents a barrier to employment & has racial disparities. Us w/ the highest rate of incarceration. Blacks received less callbacks on average though they had the same credentials. Whites w/ criminal records (17%) received more favorable treatment than blacks w/o criminal records (14%) Traditional authority: based on long standing & cultural arrangements. Charismatic authority: based on the leader"s magnetism. Rational-legal authority: based on rules & regulations/bureaucratic contexts: social power.
