Nationalism and revolution, the restoration (1862-1874, attempt to restore the dignity and strength of the chinese empire attempt at modernization from the top (qing government) down. These disasters triggered the rise of the self strengthening. Movement: wanted to preserve qing rule and confucian values as well as embracing. Western military and industrial practices shipbuilding, formation and development of western military academies, railways and shipping infrastructure, and installation of telegraph line and stations: sino-japanese war (1894-1895, fought over korea ( china"s most important client state). Japan wanted korea to open to foreign trade and declare itself independent from china: the slicing of the melon, china was the melon that was going to be tossed up and tarsleed out by. He decided that real change had to be made because chinese had just been defeated badly ( 1st sino-japanese war) this was a way to restore order for the dynasty and make it more modern.
