The majority of the large cities built in mesoamerica are seen as microcosms because they are direct representations of the surrounding landscapes. At la venta, the large earth mounds mimic the shape and orientation of the surrounding mountains. Monte alban ( white mountain ) is a huge metropolis in oaxaca, and the city is a microcosm of the surrounding area. As well as in teotihuacan, where the pyramids lining the avenue of the dead represented the landscapes. Consider the pyramid of the sun and the temple of quetzalcoatl. Caral, peru oldest known large scale development in south america, pre-ceramic, the civilizing of hunter-gatherer populations, developed around the growing of corn. Near the warm ocean, lots of fishing and marine life. Had a rich trading life because of being near the water, grew and used cotton which was new to the spaniards.
