The central issues of developmental science: sources of development. Biology v. environment: nature v. nurture, a combination of the two, plasticity. Children"s brains are very absorbent when they are younger. Sensitive periods v. critical periods: it is easier to learn something during a sensitive time. Learn language: especially a 2 or 3 language. Learning to play an instrument: it is dire that a child learn something during the critical period. Language: a complete lack of language could cause the inability to learn it later. Genie- secret of the wild child: physical. Underdeveloped motor skills: wasn"t allowed to move. Wasn"t taught to use the toilet: verbal skills. The language part of her brain was never used: pruning of the synapse, ethics. Treated like an opportunity not a person. Needed a primary attachment gure: could she have progressed farther with a person, continuity/discontinuity. Like all other people: emotions, sustenance, crave social interactions.
