Week 1
Inequalities and Absolute Values
I. Basics of an inequality
A. To solve an inequality is to find the set of all real numbers that make the
inequality true.
1. Usually an entire interval of numbers, or a union of numbers
II. Intervals
A. Open interval: consists of all numbers between and but not including a,b a

B. Closed interval: consists of all numbers between and including thea,b
endpoints.

C. You can mimic these denotations on a number line as well. Simple include a [ ] or
( ) as the endpoints on the number line, and you will have properly described the
interval of the inequality.
III. Solving Inequalities
A. The three “rules” for solving an inequality
1. We may add
the same number to both sides of the inequality
2. We may multiply
both sides of an inequality by the same positive number
3. We may multiply both sides by the same negative
number, but then we
must reverse the direction of the inequality sign
IV. Split Points
A. Basically, if we have a more complex inequality, sometimes they will have a spot
where the factor is 0. For instance…

...has two spots (3 and -2) where the inequality will equal 0.
This means we have to use certain test points in between the “0” spots to determine if
the solution set still works.
How do you do this? First, factor the side of the equation and determine the 0 points.
Then, make a number line and plot each 0 point. Finally, take numbers in between each
0 point and see if it fits the “rule” for the inequality.

Remember, we want the inequality to be true. f(x) < 0 needs to be negative! So
anywhere between -2 and 3 would satisfy the inequality.

B. An easy way to solve a quotient, instead of breaking it apart into two separate
cases, is to use test points.

1. Take the set points of 1 and -2. Then, use the points in between as your testers,
and see what fits the inequality. Solution below

** 2 is not included in the solution set because x=2 makes the inequality undefined!
2. Why does this work? Well, if you’re dividing something by something else, if
these can change signs, then it can change the sign of the entire inequality.
This is why it is essential to remember that there can be more than one answer in
an inequality.
V. Compound inequalities
A. It’s easiest to break apart a compound inequality and just make sure the
solutions match. A compound inequality is when you have an x on both sides
(and one that can easily be broken up into two inequalities). Here’s an example.
Solve .9 /x .12 < 1 < 3
.9x.1x2 < 1 < 3 Multiply over the x to get 1 in the center
.9x and 1 .1x2 < 1 < 3 Separate the compound inequality into two parts
/2.9 and x/3.1x< 1 > 1 Solve each part separately
The answer must satisfy both parts to the compound inequality. Your goal is to be able to
