Chemically defined medium aka synthetic medium: when the chemical components are known. Complex medium: aka non synthetic medium : when components are unknown. Selective media: selects only one organism to which it provides growth for. Differential media: accommodates the growth of different types of organisms, shows differences in organisms. Macconkey agar purpose: inhibts bile cells and the ability to ferment in gram positive cells used for selection of gram negative cells (not inhibited by bile cells). It also differentiates cells that can ferment from cells that can t ferment. Growth visual: not inhibited by bile cells, no growth: inhibited by bile cells (gram+) Sodium azide purpose: inhibits cytochrome oxidase growth in gram negative cells.
