Reasoned that the chinese were infringing on free trade. British easily won the war due to their superior weaponry. French followed the british and attacked as well. War forced the chinese to open up to european trade. Europeans were not subject to chinese law. Some thought the best thing to do was to revert to traditional ways, while others believed modernizing was the better answer. Followed the rise in the qing court"s internal failure, and was influenced by the western imperialism.
