Big 5 powers the following were powers until ww2 and obtained their status through conquering many territories. Not an absolute monarchy (every other country was) Most powerful in europe at the time + largest population. Leading country culturally (emulated french style/culture and learned language) Catholic but religion didn"t play a giant role for them. 4 major religions (catholicism, protestantism, eastern orthodox, islam) Never played a role in european history before. Eastern orthodox christians w/ own system of writing. Expanded towards west in 1700s establishing a new capital st. petersburg. Was near the baltic sea, and allowed more travel. Began as a tiny state around the city of berlin. Expanded through smart marriages, however the army played a bigger role. Militaristic country -> geared towards producing the best army. Taxed people heavily to spend on the army, never was it used on the rulers. Eventually had the best trained and disciplined army. Let people borrow the army, in returned gained territory.
