Nature- heredity and genetic traits determine behavior. Nurture- environment determines behavior: free will vs determinism. Free will- the individual alone has control over behavior. Determinism- belief that all events are shape and governed by forces beyond control of individual: rationality vs irrationality, optimism vs pessimism. Research methodology in social psych: experimental method, objective and systematic method of research in any specific analysis, goals of research: determine if a variable influences some form of behavior. Lecture notes 1/25/10: paul ekman, hypothesis- facial expressions carry same meaning regardless of culture, context, or language (ie ekman and friesen- 1975- tribal people, mapping facial muscles. Human face has a total of 44 muscles. Ekman found about 10,000 anatomical combinations in facial muscles: micro-momentary expressions (mme) Mme- brief, contradictory facial expression of emotion. Mme analysis and clinical intervention: telling lies (1985) 5% of the population are natural facial liars (like actors/actresses and politicians) Facial deception- using your face to lie or mislead.
