Second-order neuron: relays impulses from spinal cord/brainstem to thalamus and crosses over in between. Third-order neuron: relays impulses from thalamus to somatosensory cortex (post- central gyrus) Pathways: dorsal column pathway: impulses from touch, pressure, vibration, and proprioception second order decussates in medulla, spinothalamic pathway: impulses from pain, temperature, tickle, itch second order crosses over in spinal cord.
