Latino Families
Points to consider:
oLanguage (don’t fall under stereotype that none speak English or that all speak
Spanish)
oTime & experience in country
oRole of Latino Immigration & Immigration Status (use the word undocumented,
not illegal, don’t assume one is here illegally)
Teachers: not mandated reporters in terms of immigration  often do the opposite
Families:
oScared of Trump
oNot sure if they would be allowed to bring kids back with them if deported
Don’t assume anything
Asian-American Families
Respect immediate & extended family members
Provide opportunities to share differences between US & Asian School Systems
Understand diversity within Asian ethnic groups
Recognize Asian traditions of respect toward teachers
Consider English proficiency & understand importance of non-verbal communication
Encourage kids to be bicultural & bilingual
Eliminate stereotypes (exp. That they’re all smart in academics)
Prepare education programs for Asian parents
Barriers:
oStereotypes / myths / prejudice
oAssuming connections with majority culture
Asian American Key Points Your Family

on culture, it’s personal
May exist with sexism
Adoption Not common in China or Korea
China used to have a one-child
Adoption is considered a
