AMST/IDS 190: College Life
Final Presentation and Project
Presentation Due: 4/24
Project Due: 4/26
Your final project will consist of two parts—the project itself and a presentation (5 - 6
minutes) of the project to your classmates. I ask that each of you make an
appointment with me to discuss your project before March 30.
For your final project, you may choose one of the following options:
1. Interview someone who has already finished college and create their narrative
of college life, a kind of biography of their time in college. This person could be a
friend or family member, and they could be someone who went to Emory or
someone who went to another college or university. You may present the
information you gather either through a written paper (8 – 10 pages) or through a
digital story (4 – 6 minutes long, with 2-3 page paper).
2. Create a narrative of an individual’s college life based on documentary
evidence. Emory’s Rose Library has a large collection of papers and letters from
Emory alumni dating back to the University’s beginnings in the 1830s. Choose an
individual, read his or her papers and write a paper (8 - 10 pages) or create a digital
story (4 – 6 minutes plus a 2 – 3 page paper, if there is sufficient photographic
material) describing college life at Emory during the time that individual attended
college.
3. Using archival sources from the Rose Library, describe ways a particular
cultural event or phenomenon affected college life at Emory, or ways college life was
experienced by a particular group of people. For example, you might discuss ways
World War II or integration affected Emory students and their college experience. Or
you might discuss ways LGBTQ+ people have experienced Emory college life.
Choose an event or a group and search the archives for information on this event or
group of people. Again, write a paper (8 - 10 pages) or create a digital story (4 – 6
minutes plus a 2 – 3 page paper, if there is sufficient photographic material) about
this event or group.
