Document Summary
Polar covalent bond: intermediate in nature between a pure covalent bond and an ionic bond. Polar: having a positive pole and a negative pole. Electronegativity: the ability of an atom to attract electrons to itself in a chemical bond (which results in polar and ionic bonds) Dipole moment: occurs anytime there is a separation of positive and negative charge; magnitude created by separating two particles of equal but opposite charges of magnitude q by a distance r. Percent ionic character: the ratio of a bond"s actual dipole moment to the dipole moment it would have if the electron were completely transferred from one atom to the other. Resonance structures: one of two or more lewis structures that have the same skeletal formula (the atoms are in the same locations), but different electron arrangements. Resonance hybrid: the actual structure of the molecule is intermediate between the two (or more) resonance structures.
