Introduction: what is philosophy, comes from 2 greek words: philo (love) and sophia (wisdom) Love of wisdom: an activity of examination --> self examination, two modes, mode of living, mode of thinking/reflecting, need distance from things, the two are in a cycle, existentialism says do not separate the two modes. Is this a basic element of being human: kierkegaard, sartre, nietzsche, basic rules/concepts for existentialists, subjectivism and self-consciousness --> focus on the self, also the self or spirit --> kierkegaard. It is not just you thinking about yourself, it"s the whole relation relating to itself. Subject --> object: subject --> person, object, relationship between the two, relation is a connection/interaction between the two, subject"s relation to the subject"s relation to the object. Synthesis - two relations, looking at an object and then reflecting back on it: animals are in the first order, subject relating to an object i. e. animal looking at a tree.
