Prejudice: a preconceived negative judgment of a group and its individual members. Prejudice is an attitude: affect negative feeling, behavior such as discrimination, cognition such as negative stereotypes. All muslims are terrorists, all christians hate homosexuals, all atheists are hostile to religion . Discrimination: unjustified negative behavior towards a group or its members. Institutional discrimination (part of the institution: racism and sexism: practices that subordinate people of a given race or sex, may nor may not be motivated by prejudice, examples: word of mouth hiring practices. We have different explicit (conscious) and implicit (automatic) towards the same target. We can have implicit and explicit prejudices. Changing prejudices: explicit attitudes may change with new information and knowledge, implicit attitudes change more slowly through experience. Is racial prejudice disappearing: yes and no. 1942, less than 1/3 of white americans supported segregation. Today, ~5% of americans would not vote for a well-qualified black presidential candidate.
