Law: rule of civil conduct by supreme power in a state commanding right and wrong. Functions: maintain stability of social/political/economic system through dispute resolution, protection of property and preservation of state (permitting ordered change) Legal sanctions: means by which law enforces decisions of court. Constitutional law: fundamental law (establishing powers and limitations) District (trial courts that can hear and decide most legal controversies) Court of appeals (appeals from district courts and review orders) Supreme (highest court review decisions of federal courts of appeals and highest state courts) Special (jurisdiction over cases in particular area of federal law) Inferior trial (minor criminal cases- traffic/civil cases with small $/preliminary hearings) Special (probate, family, particular area of state) Appellate (highest decisions final except those reviewed by us supreme court) Criminal law: governs us as a society at large. Civil law: behavior we are supposed to have towards each other on personal level. Meant to compensate put victim back in original position.
