Vertical--defining yourself by the people who have authority over you. Horizontal--who you associate with, people who are like you. Groups with a political program vs ethnicity (may or may not have a political program) nationalism= people should have their own state, the state should better address the needs of a distinctive people. Make the boundaries of a governing unit equal to the ethnic unit. By 1990"s, nationalism and the nation are accepted as social constructions. Influences how we view and solve problems, how we create history. There are real and constructed dimensions of these identities. The value of an identity is not negated if it is new/small. Benedict anderson nation=imagined political community- both limited and sovereign. Imagined- members will never know most of their fellow members. Sovereign- enlightenment: nations dream of being free, divine authority fades- self governed, self rule. Community- deep horizontal comradeship nation-ness=natural- it is not chosen. Complex mix of economic and social forces mixed with chance.
