Gap analysis makes site selection based on identifying gaps in current levels of protection on a habitation level and species level. Gaps are identified using satellite imagery, gis technology to map distribution of focal species, hotspots, conservation areas: define endemism and hotspots of diversity. Endemism - characteristic of being restricted in distribution to a particular geographic region. Hotspots - areas in which number of endemic species is high. List (from most to least protected) and explain the differences between the iucn"s six categories of protected areas. Definition of protected area - a clearly defined geographical space, recognized, dedicated & managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long-term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values. Earth"s surface protected area: 18 million km2 on land and 2 million km2, 12. 5%, and 180 countries. 5% in greenland alone: only 6% is strictly protected.
