The process in which actors use specially designed signals to modify the behavior of reactors. Used to attract mate(female) or for territorial invasion (other males) Females use to recognize species and assess males. Males use the signals to assess competitive ability. Signals are modified over time for adaptive change or incidental movements that indicate signal. Signaling system evolves because a novel signal taps into a pre-existing perceptual mechanism in a receiver. Predators have a large influence on evolution of signal. 4 main sensory types: chemical, auditory, visual, and tactile. Deceptive signals: imitating signals to lure and kill. Cost of begging are honest signal and competition around siblings honest signal: used for condition hunger (birds) or endurance/threat(geckos) Prey have adaptations to avoid being eaten but predators have adaptations to eat prey = evolutionary arms race. Applied game theory selfish herd all individuals are trying to hide behind others to reduce the probability of being selected by a predator.
