NURS 3404 Midterm: Matrix #2
Document Summary
Edema- accumulation of fluid in the interstitial space. Occurs if venous hydrostatic pressure rises, plasma oncotic pressure decreases, interstitial oncotic pressure rises: elevation of venous hydrostatic pressure. Increasing pressure at venous end of capillary inhibits fluid movement back into capillary. Due to fluid overload, heart failure, liver failure, obstruction: decrease in plasma oncotic pressure. Fluid remains if the plasma oncotic pressure is too low. Result from renal disorders, liver disease, malnutrition: elevation of interstitial oncotic pressure. Trauma, burns and inflammation can damage capillary walls and allow plasma proteins to accumulate in interstitial space. Increases interstitial oncotic pressure, draws fluid into the interstitial space, holds it there: shifts of interstitial fluid to plasma. Increase in the plasma osmotic or oncotic pressure draws fluid into plasma from interstitial space. Autodigestive effects of pancreatic enzymes: trypsin, edema, necrosis, hemorrhage, elastase, hemorrhage, pathophysiology map. Etiologic factors: alcoholism, biliary tract disease, trauma.
