Document Summary

Very large molecules made up of many smaller molecules (monomers) linked together. Host of tons of products and items. In polymers, a virtually infinite number of molecules are combined. This model of the structure of atoms is often compared with the structure of the solar system. (nucleus is center, electrons orbit around) There are about 100 chemical elements that compose all matter. Erwin schrodinger (1887-1961) and werner heisenbreg (1901-1976) Electron may be depicted as clouds surrounding the nucleus. Atomic number z is the number of protons in a nuclueus. It identifies the element and place on periodic table. Mass number a is the sum of the number of protons and neutrons in a nucleus. Number of neutrons n is given n = a - z. Mass spectrometers can measure the masses of atoms, isotopes and molecules. This is the weighted average of the atomic masses for the naturally occuring isotopes of this particular element.
