PSYCH 230 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Agnosia, Universal Grammar, Social System
Document Summary
Study guide for exam #2 in psychology 230: perceptual development. Describe the methods used to study perception in infants. What do these methods tell us: preference method. Two objects are presented simultaneously and we record how long infant attends to each one. Can infer that the infant can discriminate between different objects, and they prefer one over the other: habituation method. A stimulus becomes so familiar or boring that the infant stops showing any response to it. Then present a new stimulus to see if they pay attention (dishabituation) to a fresh stimulus or do they just glance away (can"t discriminate) Can also determine preference from this: evoked potentials. Present with a stimulus and record brain waves. Can tell preference, habituation, dishabituation, etc. by peaks and valleys. When can they see patterns like adults: pattern perception. Infants aged 2 months and older can discriminate patterns similar to adults- even highly complex ones.
