Intro to the IAT
Construct Validity → refers to effectiveness of the tool
• The degree to which a test measures what it claims, or purports, to be measuring
• Using the right tool to measure the right thing
• It is the appropriateness of inferences made on the basis of observations or
measurements (often test scores), specifically whether a test measures the intended
construct
• Every experimenter is trying to have a higher construct validity

correlated with other things (measurements, behaviors, outcomes) that are believed to
be related to the construct

correlation between your measure and other consistent measures

The Implicit Association Test
• The IAT is a somewhat reliable measure
• But it has a questionable construct validity

• You will investigate the construct validity of the IAT by performing a correlational
analysis
o Select a aprticular IAT
o Determine one psychological construct that you think that IAT might be related
to

▪ Familiarity
▪ Prejudice

o Create a survey to explicitly measure that construct
o Look for a correlation between the IAT and your explicit measure

Implicit Association Test
1. The IAT can provide a measure of the strength of association between mental
constructs, such as categories and attributes (Response Time / Accuracy)
